Stockholmskällan

In 2016, I was part of the front-end team building Stockholmskällan, a digital archive and public resource created by the City of Stockholm. The platform gives citizens, students, and researchers access to historical documents, photographs, maps, and other materials that tell the story of the city.

About Stockholmskällan

Stockholmskällan is a collaboration between several city departments, including the City Archives, City Museum, and City Library. Its mission is to preserve Stockholm’s history and make it accessible through a modern, digital platform.

Technology

The platform was built on an Episerver CMS backend, with the front-end implemented using:

  • JavaScript for interaction on the main site
  • Angular 2+ for building the admin tool.
  • HTML5 and CSS3 with Sass for structure and styling
  • Responsive design to ensure accessibility across devices

"Jämför kartor" Interactive Map

My primary contribution was developing an interactive map that allowed users to explore and compare historical and modern maps of Stockholm. Features included:

  • Layer toggling to switch between multiple maps
  • Zoom and pan for detailed navigation
  • Responsive mobile support for exploration on any device
  • Integration of points of interest from Stockholmskällan’s archive
  • Could be used on the go in mobile devices with location services.

Admin tool

My other major contribution was to the admin tool used by city staff to manage the content in Stockholmskällan. Built with Angular 2+, it provided a user-friendly interface for non-technical users to curate and maintain the archive.

Impact

The updated Stockholmskällan platform gave the City of Stockholm a modern, user-friendly way to access historical resources, with the interactive map becoming one of its most engaging features. My work ensured the map was both technically solid and intuitive for a wide audience.

Awards and Recognition

Stockholmskällan received significant recognition for its design and educational value between 2017–2018, including:

  • FUISM Pedagogical Prize (2017) – Awarded together with Wikimedia Sverige for outstanding educational impact.
  • Heritage in Motion (2017) – Winner of Best Online and Web Content at the European Museum Academy conference in Skopje.
  • Svenska Designpriset (2017) – Gold medal in the Digital Editorial category, together with Creuna.
  • GLAMi Award (2018) – Winner in Educational Program at the Museums and the Web conference in Vancouver.
  • The Best in Heritage IMAGINES (2018) – Selected among 42 international projects, ranked third for Most Influential Project of the Year.

Reflection

Stockholmskällan remains one of my favorite projects. It was rewarding to contribute to a meaningful public resource while developing advanced front-end and interactive design skills. The team dynamic was also excellent — collaborative, creative, and fun.
